Applied Data Center Solutions in Ellendale, North Dakota, faced the challenge of integrating a reliable backup power solution into their high-performance computing (HPC) facility. The project demanded precise coordination to deliver and install eight 100kW UPS units with redundancy, lithium-ion batteries, and load banking services—all while navigating aggressive timelines and shifting project requirements. Partnering with CFT, the team overcame logistical and scheduling obstacles, ensuring seamless delivery, installation, and testing of the critical infrastructure needed to support the facility's operations. This case study highlights how proactive communication, and flexible solutions drove the project’s success.
Applied Data Center Solutions in Ellendale, North Dakota, required a reliable backup power solution for its core switching devices to ensure uninterrupted operations. The project involved deploying eight 100kW UPS units with internal redundancy, lithium-ion battery systems, and load banking services. Complicating the effort, the construction project’s aggressive timeline constantly challenged the critical path schedule. The initial request demanded delivery of all UPS units within just six weeks, a significant logistical challenge. Unexpected delays due to weather, project inefficiencies, and human error further compounded the schedule, threatening the timely completion of this critical infrastructure upgrade.
CFT was able to manage the dynamic project requirements, coordinating equipment release, delivery, and communication with the installing electrical contractor (EC). By adjusting to schedule changes, CFT ensured the full equipment package was delivered on the revised timeline, avoiding additional storage or restocking fees. To streamline on-site load bank testing, CFT worked closely with the EC to divide testing into two phases: the first half of the units (4) tested upon installation and the second half (4) tested later. This flexible approach minimized delays and ensured seamless integration with the evolving project schedule.
CFT’s proactive collaboration with the installing EC and consistent communication during procurement allowed for seamless delivery and installation of the equipment. Multiple pre-installation meetings ensured the field team was well-prepared with clear expectations for timing, materials, and procedures. This groundwork facilitated a smooth installation process, followed by successful startup and testing by the SE field technician.
Through early communication, precise planning, and strong coordination, CFT, Graybar, and Magnum Electric delivered high-value support for this critical component of the HPC facility's electrical infrastructure. Their efforts ensured the project stayed on track and progressed efficiently, meeting the dynamic needs of the installation.
